Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner will not be participating in the Irish‘s spring game this Saturday after suffering an off-field ankle injury.
The former four-star recruit is in the midst of a QB battle with Connecticut-native Drew Pyne for the team’s starting job.
On Wednesday, head coach Marcus Freeman revealed more about Buchner’s unfortunate injury.
Per Notre Dame beat writer Pete Sampson, “Marcus Freeman said Tyler Buchner’s ankle injury was non-football related. Missed a stair walking around the facility. Out for the spring game.”

As a true freshman, Buchner was able to see live bullets in 10 Notre Dame games last season; completing 21 of his 35 attempts for 298 yards and 1:1 touchdown to interception ratio. He also showcased his legs a bit, running the ball 46 times for 336 yards and a trio of scores.
“[Tyler Buchner] got 13 really, really good practices in,” Marcus Freeman said of the QB’s spring. “I’m pleased with that part of it.
Buchner is projected to be the Irish’s starter going into 2022.
The ankle injury isn’t believed to be too serious. But, it is enough for Notre Dame to hold him out of the spring game, as well as the team’s final tuneup on Thursday.
