Insert a “returns a losing Rose Bowl QB joke” here

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish wasted little time in adding to its 2021 roster. The Irish have secured the commitment of quarterback transfer Jack Coan from the Wisconsin Badgers.

Extremely thankful for the opportunity. Let’s get to work! @NDFootball pic.twitter.com/wKCEbWFgzY

Jack Coan was a 3-Star quarterback from New York and was part of Wisconsin’s 2017 recruiting class. After a little playing time in both his freshman and sophomore years, Coan took over as the starter in 2019 where he threw for 2727 yards 18 TD and 5 INT with a 69% completion rate. He’s not really a “runner” and managed only 22 yards on the ground in Madison in ‘19.

Coan lost the starting job to Graham Mertz after injuring his foot in practice, and Wisconsin had one of those weird Big Ten seasons of 2020.

Notre Dame is obviously trying to help bridge the gap between Ian Book and Tyler Buchner. Brendon Clark is having surgery on a torn ACL, and his future is still very cloudy. Drew Pyne doesn’t appear to be ready at all to take over as the main signal caller in South Bend, and this creates a big problem — that Notre Dame just helped out quite a bit with the addition of Coan.

Jack Coan 2019 Stats

Here’s an early look at what Coan may provide to Notre Dame

He isn’t spectacular but is very a solid quarterback. For reference, Ian Book averaged 0.23 EPA/Pass this year

One difference will be the rushing ability, as Coan won’t provide much with his legs pic.twitter.com/e8RCDlN4ke

During Coan’s big year in 2019, Wisconsin finished #11 in the AP Poll after a 10-4 season that included two losses to the Ohio State Buckeyes and a one point loss to the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl.

While this may not excite many Irish fans out there, Coan is a fantastic addition to Notre Dame for 2021. His experience, accuracy, and fairly strong arm will likely land him the starting job in game one against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee.

This is going to be a volatile offseason for rosters all over the country, so for the Irish to help solidify the most important position on the field in the month of January is awesome.
