Punter from down under
On Wednesday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish signed Australian punter James Rendell as part of its incoming 2024 recruiting class.
Very interesting development here, #NotreDame going international to find a new punter after Bryce McFerson left South Bend.

According to Irish Sports Daily’s Matt Freeman, Rendell comes to Notre Dame as a graduate transfer — but the exact number of years of eligibility that he will have during his time in South Bend is still to be determined by the NCAA.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder is expected to have multiple years of eligibility left and how much will be decided on NCAA waivers in the future. Rendell, who is 23 years old, will report to campus in early June when the team returns from break.
Former Notre Dame punter Tyler Newsome helped spearhead Rendell’s recruitment as advised Biagi of Rendell’s talents. Newsome had heard about him through ProKick Australia trainer MacKenzie Morgan, who punted at Temple.
The only two points that I want to talk about are…
- Rendell is friggin huge for a punter. 6’5” and 225 pounds? Are we sure we can’t run a few more fake punts this year and watch this dude bulldoze a cornerback?
- One of my all-time favorite Notre Dame players is Tyler New some — who put up 30 reps at the NFL Combine (which is basically him benching this big Aussie 30 times).
I’m ready for any and all super Australian references and this site is fully ready to get that Foster’s sponsorship (or Outback — we love a good Bloomin’ Onion).
BTW — former Notre Dame punter, Bryce McFerson, is now committed to play for the Maryland Terrapins.
