I almost fell asleep typing this
Not long ago, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish schedule had a very strong presence of Big 10 teams on its schedule each year — specifically in the first month of the season. The Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, and the Purdue Boilermakers were there almost every single year; and even then the Irish have played a fourth from time to time.
It was all very midwesterny.
That all changed when the Irish made their deal with the ACC to play 5 games every year. The annual Big 10 opponents were pushed to the side as random future games, and it changed the way we have watched the Irish since 2014.
Like I said though… a few of these opponents were just pushed down the schedule to be randomly played — like this year’s Purdue game. I just wish they wouldn’t, or at least do it with someone else.
Notre Dame should have held on to ONE Big 10 school and that school is Michigan State.
Of course I’ve gone over this time and time again, but that’s only because of how strongly I feel about the series — which I have placed at #2 in the pantheon of Notre Dame’s rivals. So as the day has unfolded here at OFD, I only became more bitter seeing Purdue’s helmet up on the site.
For my taste, the Irish should either create a rotation with Purdue, MSU, and Michigan — or just play Sparty every year straight up. It will lessen the annoyance I feel whenever I see Virginia on the schedule.
What do you think?
