A little fall camp attrition
On Wednesday John Olmstead, a sophomore offensive lineman for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, put his name in the transfer portal. He announced it via Twitter with a brief statement:
“Due to personal reasons that I would prefer to keep private, I have made the decision to enter the transfer portal. I would like to thank Coach Kelly and Notre Dame for the opportunity to pursue my degree and play college football at the highest level.”
John was a member of the 2019 recruiting class for the Irish and he is the first one to walk away from Notre Dame as a transfer.
Notre Dame is still very deep along the offensive line after a lot of solid years recruiting the position group. Should there still be a full 2020 season, however, that depth may be put to the test with all of the COVID-19 protocols. There’s nothing over the last year to suggest that Olmstead was getting in the mix at guard — although that’s not saying a lot given his youth.
The 2020 scholarship is now updated to include Colin Grunhard at guard with a scholarship which keeps the Irish at 85.
John can still pull his name from the transfer portal, but will most likely move on from Notre Dame. We wish him all the best and good luck for his future.
