Lou Holtz has weighed in on Ryan Day calling him out following Ohio State’s win over Notre Dame last weekend.
Appearing on OutKick’s “Don’t @ Me” show with host Dan Dakich Tuesday, Holtz did not back down from his pregame prediction that the Fighting Irish would beat the Buckeyes.
“Notre Dame was a better football team,” Holtz told Dakich. “I felt Notre Dame won the football game. All we had to do was fall on the ball.”
Holtz had picked his former team to win by 10 points during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” Friday, calling out Ohio State’s lack of physicality in the process.
That led to Day firing back at Holtz in a WWE promo style rant after OSU pulled out a last-second 17-14 win at Notre Dame Stadium last Saturday.
Three days later, Holtz was complimentary of Day, but did not alter his feelings on the Buckeyes.
“He’s a great coach,” Holtz told Dakich Tuesday. “He’s done a tremendous job. He has a great offensive mind. Ohio State’s a good team. I don’t think they’re a great team. He can go after me all he wants. I honestly felt that Notre Dame was better and more physical. And I’m sorry that coach Day was offended by it. I hope he goes on and has a wonderful year. I don’t think they’ll be a great team. I really don’t.”
Holtz also poked some fun at Day’s record against Michigan, which he said was 0-2 but is actually 1-2.
At one point, he even admitted he probably should have kept his feelings to himself…before repeating them again.
“I probably shouldn’t have said it.” Holtz said. “I have great respect for Coach Day. But they are not a real physical football team.”
