The Alabama Crimson Tide haven’t yet settled their starting quarterback situation for the 2023 college football season. But one notable player in the transfer portal could be a candidate to muddy the waters even further.
According to On3 Sports‘ Matt Zenitz and Pete Nakos, Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is in Tuscaloosa to visit the team. Buchner entered the transfer portal earlier this week but has opened the door to returning to South Bend.
It’s worth noting that Alabama hired Buchner’s former offensive coordinator, Tommy Rees, for the same role earlier in the offseason.
Notre Dame welcomed former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman into the fold earlier this year and are expected to name him the starting quarterback over Buchner. That’s believed to have prompted Buchner entering the transfer portal.

Tyler Buchner was a four-star quarterback in the Class of 2021, per 247Sports. He was the No. 11 QB in the nation and the No. 5 prospect from the state of California at the time.
In two seasons at Notre Dame, Buchner has completed 57-percent of his passes for 949 yards and six touchdowns with eight interceptions.
While hardly elite numbers, it may still make Buchner an upgrade over Alabama’s current quarterbacks Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson, who struggled in the team’s recent A-Day Game.
Will Tyler Buchner transfer to Alabama? Who will be the Crimson Tide QB in 2023?
