A Notre Dame football legend has reportedly passed away.
Johnny Lujack, who led the Fighting Irish to three National Championships in 1943, 1946, and 1947, has passed away due to a brief illness at the age of 98.
His death was confirmed to the Associated Press by his granddaughter, Amy. Lujack seemed to be in good health until a couple of weeks ago when he went into hospice care.
“He was not only a legend in Notre Dame football and the sports world,” Amy Schiller said, “he was a legend as a father and grandfather and great grandfather.”
He won the Heisman Trophy in 1947 in addition to helping the Fighting Irish win a title for that season.
After his time at Notre Dame, he was picked in the first round of the 1948 NFL Draft and played four seasons before he stopped playing. He appeared in 45 games and threw for 6,295 yards through the air, 41 touchdowns, and 54 interceptions.
Our thoughts are with Lujack’s family and friends. May he rest in peace.
