I have to admit something… I was wrong. For years I advocated for and hoped for Notre Dame to rip up the natural grass that served the university since the Stadium first opened its gates. I was looking toward the future, and saw the obvious need foe a better playing surface.
Notre Dame finally made that move for the 2014 season, and then 8 years later, they replaced it once again with new fieldturf — which will need replacing after 8 years in 2030. Except… they need to go back to grass.
While there are nostalgic points that can be made about a return to grass — those are all vastly overrated (while still being nice). In my opinion, the irish need to return to grass for one reason and one reason only… injuries. Study after study has shown there are more injuries on fieldturf than on natural grass, and I’m all about player safety (which can also ensure victories).
There have been no amount of offseason events inside Notre Dame Stadium that a good grounds crew couldn’t manage. It’s just absurd anymore — go back to grass.
Also… how do y’all feel about nooners? Can we get one a year at home?
