Irish Run Rule Falcons
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Brady Gumpf crushed a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to close out a 10-0 win for the Notre Dame baseball team over Bowling Green on Friday night.
Notre Dame took a commanding lead through two innings of play. The Irish plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Davis Johnson drove in Carson Tinney and DM Jefferson with a double to the left-center gap. In the bottom of the second, the home side pushed four runs across to gain a 6-0 advantage. Johnson added his second double in as many at-bats to drive in Jayce Lee. Parker Brzustewicz singled to left field as Tinney came in to score. A wild pitch allowed Johnson to make it a 5-0 lead while Brzustewicz moved into scoring position. Estevan Moreno then capped off the scoring in the inning with a single to left field, driving in Brzustewicz from second on the play.
Jack Radel retired the side in order in both the third and the fourth innings. The offense added another run in the bottom half of the fourth as Connor Hincks drew the throw to second and extended the play long enough to allow Davis Johnson to come in and score on a first-and-third play.
Radel continued to deal on the bump as the sophomore retired the side yet again in the top of the fifth to close out his strong outing. Oisin Lee came on in relief in the sixth and forced the Falcons into stranding a runner on third by striking out three consecutive batters to end the threat. Chase Van Ameyde added a strikeout in the top of the seventh in a shutout inning for the Irish.
In the bottom of the seventh, Connor Hincks collected his 100th career hit with a ground-rule double to left center to lead off the inning. Estevan Moreno drew a full-count walk to get a pair on base. Brady Gumpf then put the exclamation point on the game with a game-ending, three-run home run to left-center field as the Irish captured the 10-0 run-rule win in seven innings.
Jack Radel earned the win on the mound after going 5.0 with three hits, five strikeouts, no runs, no walks, and no extra-base hits. Oisin Lee and Chase Van Ameyde each went 1.0 and did not surrender a run in the shared-shutout effort on the mound for the Irish.
Davis Johnson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and three RBI. Connor Hincks was 2-for-3 and tallied the 100th hit of his career with a double, a walk, and a run. Brady Gumpf went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and a run. DM Jefferson added a 2-for-3 effort with a walk and a run. Parker Brzustewicz and Estevan Moreno each had a hit, an RBI, and a run in the win. Carson Tinney scored two runs, and Jayce Lee added a run.
