The Notre Dame football family has experienced multiple tragic deaths recently, including former All-American Tony Hunter.

Hunter, who played running back, wide receiver and tight end for the Fighting Irish from 1979-82, passed away on June 11. He was 64.

Notre Dame honored his memory on X/Twitter Thursday afternoon.

“We mourn the loss of Tony Hunter. We send our condolences to his family and friends,” the program wrote.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Hunter played his high school ball at Archbishop Moeller, where his coach was Gerry Faust, who eventually held the same position at Notre Dame.

In his four-year career, Hunter caught 120 passes for 1,897 yards and five touchdowns while adding 120 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries. He was a Newspaper Enterprise Association first-team All-American as a senior in 1982.

The Buffalo Bills made Hunter the No. 13 overall pick in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons in Buffalo, then played two years with the Los Angeles Rams before suffering a career-ending knee injury in 1986.

Hunter caught 134 passes for 1,501 yards and nine touchdowns in 47 regular season games at the NFL level, where he played tight end.

Sadly, he is the third Notre Dame football fixture to pass away this month, joining former running back Ed Gulyas and “No. 1 fan” Keith Penrod.
