We’re a little over three months away until the start of the 2023 college football season and we’re all eagerly waiting to see which teams set themselves up in the best position for success. But there are a few teams that at least one analyst suspects could be getting more hype than they deserve.
In a feature for 247Sports, analyst Brad Crawford did write-ups on three college football teams that he suspects are going to drop from their preseason rankings rather quickly. He identified Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Oregon State as teams that are a bit overrated right now.
For Oregon State, Crawford believes that their schedule is too daunting even with transfer QB D.J. Uiagalelei to justify an average ranking of 21.
In the case of Ole Miss, Crawford notes that Ole Miss play three of their toughest games in their first four weeks and if they suffer two or three losses, they’ll be out of national title contention well before the middle of the season.
“That’s three potential losses in September for Lane Kiffin. Gulp. Not only would that put Ole Miss outside of the national rankings, but it would be an uphill climb to get back there the rest of the way to justify preseason billing. It’s not going to happen,” Crawford wrote.
As for the Fighting Irish, Crawford feels that Notre Dame lost too many talents on both the field and the coaching staff and have too tough of a schedule to maintain their average ranking of 9.
