Going over the Mountaineers’ roster to see which players may follow their coach to Bloomington.
With the Darian DeVries hire now official at Indiana, it’s worth wondering if any of his former players at West Virginia would be interested in following him to Bloomington to join his first roster.
His son Tucker DeVries, among the top players in the country when healthy, is already expected to be among those who would join the elder DeVries in Bloomington.
Who else could be a factor? Let’s take a look:
Amani Hansberry – Forward
- This is probably the most intriguing option on the list. Hansberry, a sophomore this past season, appears at the five whenever he’s on the court in KenPom’s depth chart and most frequent lineups over the past five games. He’s a bit undersized at 6’8”, 240 lbs but did enough to average 9.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists. He’s one of a series of former Illinois players who joined the Mountaineers’ program through the portal when DeVries arrived last offseason and brought on former Illini assistant Chester Frazier.
Jonathon Powell – Guard
- Powell was just a freshman this past season and averaged 8.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 30.1 minutes per game while shooting 35.2% from long range. He originally committed to Xavier but requested out of his letter of intent and ended up signing with West Virginia. He’s also already in the portal.
Sencire Harris – Guard
- If Harris’ name sounds familiar it’s because he was a freshman on Illinois’ 2022-23 team. He redshirted the 2023-24 season and then transferred to West Virginia last offseason. He just wrapped up his redshirt sophomore year averaging 5.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 26.9 minutes per game.
KJ Tenner – Guard
- Tenner was a Drake commit in the class of 2024 who ended up following DeVries to West Virginia. He averaged 2.4 points, 0.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 13.1 minutes per game.
