It’s the second contract extension for Moren since her hiring in 2014

Now that the most successful season in Indiana women’s basketball program has history has come to an end, Teri Moren can get paid.

And she will.

IU announced Thursday that it has agreed to a new contract with the seventh-year coach that increases her annual average compensation to $862,500 through the 2026-27 season. According to a release, Moren’s deal also includes several performance bonuses for Big Ten regular and postseason titles, NCAA Tournament and WNIT Tournament participation and wins, conference and national coach of the year awards and team academic benchmarks.

For Moren, the new deal increases her salary by more than $200,000 annually and adds four more years to the extension she signed in 2017.

“Teri Moren is the architect of an unprecedented era of success for our women’s basketball program, and I’m excited that we have agreed to a new deal that ensures she will be here for many years to come,” IU athletic director Scott Dolson said in a statement. “With six straight 20-win seasons and this year’s run to the Elite Eight, Teri has built our program into one of the very best in the Big Ten.

“This new contract places her in the upper echelon among her conference peers, rewards those achievements, and recognizes the upward trajectory that we are on. In my more than 30 years with the department I’ve never been as excited about the future of IU Women’s Basketball, and that’s because we have the right person leading us in the right direction.”

Moren’s last extension, signed in June 2017, was not previously announced by the university. In December 2019, the Bloomington Herald-Times obtained a copy of the agreement, which paid Moren $300,000 in base salary and $325,000 in outside, marketing and promotional income.

A full look at the new contract and/or memorandum of understanding was not immediately possible. According to IndyStar’s Zach Osterman, Moren’s updated agreement does retain the $10 million buyout should Purdue try to hire her.

Moren has compiled a 148-80 overall record at IU and led the team to the postseason five times, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. She has won 20 or more games in each of the last six seasons, while establishing new program records for conference wins in each of the past two years.
