Search Season Chugs Along
After much of the attention had been surrounding Clemson’s Brad Brownell and Drake’s Ben McCollum as leading candidates for the Indiana men’s basketball head coaching job, West Virginia’s Darian DeVries has potentially emerged as a front runner, per Jeff Goodman.
West Virginia’s Darian DeVries has emerged as one of – if not the top candidate for the Indiana job – source told @TheFieldOf68.
I’m told by sources that nothing is done yet, but that DeVries could wind up being the guy. Drake’s Ben McCollum and a third “mystery” candidate…

DeVries just wrapped up his first season with the Mountaineers, finishing at 19-13 and notching key wins against Gonzaga, Arizona, Kansas, and Iowa State. West Virginia was widely considered one of the biggest snubs from the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
Before that, DeVries spent six years as the head coach at Drake, amassing a .732 win percentage, two regular season conference titles, and one conference tournament championship. He had Drake in the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years.
DeVries, an Iowa native, was also connected to the Iowa job, like fellow Indiana candidate McCollum, so Indiana may have to fend off a conference rival to secure DeVries services.
With DeVries’ season wrapped up, look for news to possibly move quickly if he is Indiana’s candidate. Both Brownell and McCollum will have their own seasons to wrap up before negotiating new contracts, presumably.
