Warren has spent the past 2 years as Georgia’s defensive backs coach

Tom Allen has found his next defensive coordinator.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, it’s Georgia defensive backs coach Charlton Warren. The 44-year-old has experience calling a defense from his time at Air Force, where he served as his alma mater’s defensive coordinator in 2012 and 2013. Warren spent the past two seasons on Georgia’s staff, and has also coached the secondary at Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida.

At Georgia, Warren worked on a unit that led the nation in scoring defense in 2019. There, he also coached first-team All-American safety J.R. Reed. During his one year at Florida in 2018, Warren was part of a staff that helped the Gators improve in several categories, most notably takeaways (tied for 11th nationally with 26) and pass efficiency defense (No. 17, 112.69).

Warren has also received credit as an excellent recruiter. According to 247 Sports, he assisted in Georgia’s recruitment of one five-star prospect and five four-star recruits during his short time in Athens.

At IU, Warren’s arrival will probably mean a staff shakeup of some sort. In addition to overseeing the defense, Warren’s predecessor, Kane Wommack, also coached IU’s linebackers. So Indiana still needs a linebackers coach, though Allen said last week that he believes his current group of defensive assistants is versatile enough to shuffle spots, depending on his coordinator hire.

As a player, Warren was a three-year letterman at defensive back for Air Force. After graduating in 1999, he was a C-130 avionics program manager while stationed at Warner Robins AFB from 2000 to 2003. He also spent a year serving as an air-to-ground weapons program manager for the Air Armament Center while stationed at Eglin AFB.
