Report via Indy Star’s Zach Osterman:
Race Thompson announced Thursday he plans to withdraw from the transfer portal and return to IU, landing Mike Woodson yet another roster win after a tumultuous month of March.
“After talking it over with my family, I’m happy to announce I’m coming back to Indiana,” Thompson said in a post on his Instagram account. “I’m excited for coach Woodson and the future of the program. Go Hoosiers!”
A rising redshirt senior, Thompson was a regular starter at the four for the Hoosiers last season. Alongside Trayce Jackson-Davis, Thompson helped form one of the most-productive starting frontcourts in the Big Ten. Thompson averaged 9.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game last winter. He was also among the Hoosiers’ best rebounders on a per-opportunity basis.
Thompson’s return bolsters Woodson’s options in the post, days after Indiana strengthened extensively in the backcourt and on the wing.
Just this week, rising sophomores Khristian Lander and Jordan Geronimo both announced their intention to withdraw from the portal and return to IU, and Pitt transfer Xavier Johnson announced his commitment to Indiana.
In total, IU has returned every player who entered the portal save Al Durham, who is transferring to Providence, and Armaan Franklin, who has yet to make a final decision. The Hoosiers would happily bring Franklin back, while Illinois, Louisville and Virginia are prominent among the teams recruiting him.
