Penn opts out of women’s season

IU will be without one of its most experienced guards the rest of the way

In a surprising twist to the women’s basketball campaign, Indiana announced prior to Sunday afternoon’s game at Iowa that senior guard Jaelynn Penn has opted out of the remainder of the season.

Penn started 10 of the 11 games in which she appeared this season, averaging 9.5 points and 4.9 rebounds. She’s also developed into IU’s most trusted defender, often taking on the top assignment for coach Teri Moren.

But this season was a frustrating one for the Louisville native, who missed time due to an injury suffered against Maryland last month. Penn also had trouble finding her stroke from beyond the arc, a continuation of last season’s struggles from deep. After shooting 34% from 3-point range across her first two seasons, Penn shot just 28% over her junior and senior seasons.

In her final game of the season last week against Michigan State, Penn scored 13 points and hit all three of her 3-pointers in a come-from-behind win over the Spartans.

IU and Iowa are scheduled to tip at 2 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. The game will air on ESPN2.
