Indiana senior guard Ali Patberg was named to a pair of national player of the year watch lists in women’s college basketball on Tuesday.
The preseason All-Big Ten selection is on the Naismith Trophy Top 50 preseason watch list, as well as the Wade Trophy preseason watch list.
The Wade Trophy, now in its 44th year, is the oldest national player of the year in women’s basketball and the preseason list is composed of players selected by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division I Coaches’ All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list midseason to determine any additions to the list based on the first half of the season.
Patberg, who was an honorable mention WBCA All-American last year, is just the third Hoosier to earn a spot on the Wade Trophy watch list, joining Tyra Buss in 2017 and 2018 as well as Denise Jackson in 1983 and 1984.
This is the second straight year Patberg has been named to the Naismith Trophy watch list. She was a preseason and midseason candidate for the award last year. The midseason top 30 will be announced in early February before competition is narrowed to 10 semifinalists on March 2, 2021, and then four finalists on March 19, 2021.
Patberg, who averaged 15.6 points, 5.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game as a junior, is also on the preseason watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award, for which she was a finalist last year.
