Hoosiers have a feel for how the selection committee views them so far
The regular season is not yet done, with five games — as far as we know — still remaining on Indiana’s women’s basketball schedule. But if the season ended today, the Hoosiers would have a feel for where they’d stand in the eyes of the bracket builders.
IU received a No. 4 seed and placement at No. 15 overall in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee’s first top 16 reveal on Monday night. The committee placed Indiana in Region 3 with No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 NC State and No. 3 Georgia. IU is one of two Big Ten programs rated inside the top 16, joining No. 7 Maryland.
The seeding feels about right for the Hoosiers, who are ranked at No. 14 in the AP Top 25 and No. 9 in the NET. Indiana is 13-4 with losses to NET No. 7 Maryland, NET No. 17 Tennessee, NET No. 18 Ohio State and NET No. 21 Kentucky. IU’s most notable wins are against NET No. 26 Northwestern, NET No. 30 Iowa and NET No. 35 Michigan State.
Indiana’s remaining schedule features at least a couple opportunities to add to the resume, with games against NET No. 14 Michigan (home, Thursday) and Ohio State (away, Feb. 27) on deck.
Here’s how the rest of the top 16 looks this week:
- UConn (No. 1 seed – Region 1)
- South Carolina (No. 1 seed – Region 2)
- Stanford (No. 1 seed – Region 3)
- Louisville (No. 1 seed – Region 4)
- Texas A&M
- NC State
- West Virginia
This year’s NCAA Tournament will be held between March 21 and April 4, with all games taking place in San Antonio and the surrounding region. The committee’s second reveal will take place on March 1, followed by the ESPN Selection Show on March 15.
