DeVries’ support staff is now official.
Indiana men’s basketball already introduced its first coaching staff and roster under Darian DeVries, opting to make both official in late May and early June. Now the support staff is website official as well.
Here’s the staff, per an official release:
- Mike Bargen – Special Assistant to the Head Coach
Bargen was most recently an associate head coach at Bradley, a position that had him working as a rival to DeVries’ Drake program. The two were graduate assistants on Dana Altman’s Creighton staff. Given his lengthy time spent as an assistant, he’ll likely work in an advisory role.
- Ryan Horn – Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
Horn’s hiring ends the tenure of longtime strength and conditioning coach Clif Marshall, who was retained by Mike Woodson after being hired by Archie Miller. He’s worked with DeVries since the latter’s time at Drake, with previous athletic training stints at programs such as Wichita State, Tulsa, Wake Forest and in the private sector.
- Andrew Vereen – Athletic Trainer
Like Horn, Vereen spent time with DeVries at Drake. Unlike Horn, he didn’t follow DeVries to West Virginia. He’s previously spent time with Kansas’ football program.
- Justin Bailey – Director of Player Personnel
Bailey joins the staff after having spent four seasons as an assistant at Sam Houston State, where he worked with current Indiana guard Lamar Wilkerson.
- Garrett Sturtz – Director of Operations
Sturtz is joining Indiana’s staff after having held the same position at West Virginia during the 2024-25 season. He was previously a graduate assistant and player at Drake under DeVries.
Fun Fact: Sturtz is one of just two MVC guards in the conference’s history to hold their program’s career record for total rebounds. The other? Indiana high school basketball legend Oscar Robertson.
- Jalen Cannady – Video and Player Development Analyst
Cannady was previously the men’s basketball video coordinator during DeVries’ lone season at West Virginia in 2024-25. He previously worked in the same position for the Birmingham Squadron, the New Orleans Pelicans’ NBA G-League affiliate.
- Jackson Creel – Graduate Manager
Creel should be a familiar name, he spent the previous two seasons as a walk-on with the program. He previously spent three seasons at Rend Lake Junior College, averaging 12.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists in his career.
- ShanQuan Hemphill – Graduate Manager
Hemphill, a graduate of Michigan City High School in northern Indiana, spent two seasons playing for DeVries at Drake before spending time overseas in Europe.
