Devries’ name has been brought up in reports and rumors for the Hoosiers’ head coaching job.
West Virginia’s Darian DeVries has been linked to the open Indiana head coach men’s basketball job in rumors.
With the names that have been brought up lately, DeVries is a bit out of left field. His name appeared on a few early lists before he faded a bit only to re-emerge here late. An Iowa native who played at Northern Iowa and coached at Drake, he’s also been linked to the now-open Iowa job.
Could Indiana swoop in and land DeVries instead?
Let’s take a deeper dive into his profile:
The case for DeVries…
- DeVries was a great success story at Drake for six years, taking the Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournaments in the process. This first year at West Virginia, when he was hit with a ton of awful injury luck, is the first that’s seen him win less than 20 games in a season.
- He generally runs a solid style of offense that works in the metrics and has been seen as an up-and-comer candidate for quite some time. He finally got his shot at West Virginia and frankly should’ve taken the Mountaineers to the NCAA Tournament in year one.
- DeVries generally adapts his style to best fit his roster. He can take a group of players, figure out what they do well individually and together and then put that on the basketball floor.
The case against DeVries…
- DeVries has been a head coach since 2019 and has yet to win an NCAA Tournament game. He went to March Madness three times as stated above but he never won a game when he got there. This was also true for Kentucky and Mark Pope but hey, you never know,
- DeVries isn’t necessarily a wow candidate. This one is absolutely a reach, I felt the need to balance out the top with the bottom, but he came out of left field for a reason. I’d go on and say he could have trouble getting the fanbase excited but I don’t necessarily think that’s even true. DeVries is solid all around.
