DeVries worked under McDermott at Creighton as a longtime assistant.
Creighton head men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott, who worked with new Indiana head coach Darian DeVries when the latter was an assistant at Creighton prior to his hiring at Drake, provided his thoughts on DeVries’ hiring in Bloomington to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.
“Drock is a grinder,” McDermott said. “His tireless work ethic and passion for bringing out the best in his players is unmatched. He is an outside of the box thinker on both ends of the floor. Indiana hit a home run.”
DeVries’ coaching career began at Drake when he was hired as a graduate assistant on Dana Altman’s staff following the conclusion of his playing career at Northern Iowa and was ultimately elevated to an assistant coaching role after a few years in 2001.
When McDermott took over as the new head coach in Omaha in 2010, he elected to keep DeVries on his staff.
