Breaking down DeVries’ 2025 signing class with the Mountaineers.
It’s just not uncommon at all in coaching changes.
When a coach leaves one program for another, especially now with the transfer portal in mind, he tends to bring his players from that program with him. Occasionally, previously signed recruits will also follow that coach to a new program.
It happened with football when Indiana hired Curt Cignetti away from James Madison. Could it happen for men’s basketball with Darian DeVries? It’s worth noting that Trent Sisley, Indiana’s lone signee in the 2025 class
Let’s go into his signees from the 2025 recruiting class and think about it:
Kelvin Odih – SF
Odih is a 4-star small forward listed at 6’4”, 190 lbs out of SoCal Academy in Castaic, California. His other offers included Rutgers, Marquette, Colorado, Creighton and Iowa.
He was praised for his overall ability and effort on the defensive end of the floor, using his length and strength to frustrate opponents on the ball with physicality. Odih could have some upside offensively as well with his explosiveness and speed.
Here’s what DeVries had to say about him in an official release from WVU:
“We are thrilled to welcome Kelvin to our Mountaineer family,” DeVries said. “We identified Kelvin early in the summer as someone who we wanted to recruit to West Virginia. His competitive spirit, will to win and versatility on both ends of the court are attributes that we highly value. We are looking forward to coaching Kelvin and helping him reach his potential both on and off the basketball court.”
Trent MacLean – PF
MacLean is a 3-star power forward listed at 6’9”, 195 lbs out of SoCal Academy in Castaic, California. His other offers included Rutgers, Saint Mary’s and Arizona State.
He plays well from the perimeter and has the usual skillset you’d expect from a stretch four with his strong shooting ability. He could have more upside as he develops his all-around game outside of shooting.
Here’s what DeVries had to say about him in an official release from WVU:
“We are elated to welcome Trent to our Mountaineer family,” DeVries said. “He possesses the rare combination of size and the ability to shoot the basketball with deep range that will fit perfectly with our style of play. Trent’s best basketball is still ahead of him, and we look forward to helping him reach his full potential on and off the basketball court.”
Braydon Hawthorne – SF
This one is less likely. Hawthorne is the lone member of the class to have not asked out of his letter of intent and is a native of West Virginia, being ranked as the top player in the state in the class of 2025.
Here’s what DeVries had to say about him in an official release from WVU:
“We are thrilled to welcome Braydon to our Mountaineer family,” DeVries said. “Braydon has tremendous upside and positional size at 6-foot-9 on the wing. His skill, shooting and length as well as being a 4.0 student and West Virginia native are things we valued in his recruitment. We are excited to help Braydon develop here on and off the court.”
