Xavier Johnson will return to Indiana for one more season.
The men’s basketball program announced Wednesday that the NCAA approved a medical hardship waiver to grant Johnson an extra year of collegiate eligibility. The guard’s senior year ended when he broke his foot on Dec. 17.
“We are very happy for Xavier and his family and can’t wait to have him be a key member of our program next season,” Indiana head coach Mike Woodson said. “I know this year was challenging for him, but he brought a positive attitude every day, and I believe he will bring a great deal to our team next season because of the adversity he has faced.”

Johnson averaged 9.9 points, 4.9 assists, and 1.2 steals in 11 games for the Hoosiers last season. The Virginia native started 34 games after transferring from Pittsburgh in 2021-22.
After depositing 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest through five seasons, the 23-year-old will get another opportunity to end his college career on better terms. He celebrated the news by declaring “I’m back” on Twitter.
