Patrick McCaffery is leaving his father’s side and has transferred to a school in the Big East.

McCaffery, the son of Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery, has transferred to Butler, per his Instagram.

This will be his sixth and final season of college eligibility after spending the last five with Iowa. He finished the season averaging 8.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while also shooting 44-percent from the floor.

For his career, he’s averaged 8.5 points and three rebounds per game. His best season (so far) came in 2021-22 when he averaged 10.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

McCaffery will join a Butler program that finished 18-15 overall and 9-11 in Big East play. The Bulldogs ended up missing the NCAA Tournament for a sixth straight season and haven’t made the dance since 2017-18 when they got to the second round.

Before this six-year hiatus from the tournament, the Bulldogs had been in the NCAA Tournament in five of the prior six seasons.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2023 season with a 19-16 record after losing to the Utah Utes in the NIT.

Before committing to the Hawkeyes, McCaffery was originally a four-star recruit in the 2019 recruiting class and the 19th-best small forward in the country, per 247Sports composite rankings. He was also the No. 86 overall recruit in the country.

He’s the latest player to commit to a different school after entering the transfer portal. There will be plenty more that commit to a new program this week.
