Paul George’s ‘Disrespectful’ Comments About Anthony Edwards Brewing a Rivalry?

September 4, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Paul George criticized Anthony Edwards for his comment about the 1990s NBA.

Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George recently criticized Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards for his remarks about past NBA players. Edwards had claimed that Michael Jordan was the only skilled player in earlier eras, which sparked controversy. Edwards has received expected criticism from Hall-of-Famers like Magic Johnson. But do PG13’s comments have enough weight behind them to spark a rivalry?

Paul George’s ‘Disrespectful’ Comments About Anthony Edwards Brewing a Rivalry?

On a recent episode of Paul George’s Podcast “Podcast P” criticized Edwards’ comments by saying the following.

“I thought it was kind of disrespectful to the game,” George commented. “It was a very immature comment. Anthony Edwards is extremely talented, but the game’s growth demands respect for those who came before us.”

George isn’t alone in this sentiment. Los Angeles Lakers legend and Hall of Famer Magic also responded to Edwards’ remarks. Johnson stated,

“I don’t respond to a guy who’s never won a championship. There’s nothing to really say. He didn’t win a college championship. I don’t even know if he won a high school championship.”

Edwards, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, is a rising star in the league. However, his comments have not been well-received by everyone, particularly by those who value the contributions of previous generations of NBA players. Edwards may believe that today’s NBA features more skilled players than in Jordan’s era. However, it’s important to note that the NBA has undergone significant changes over the years. Rule changes, including eliminating hand-checking and the emphasis on the three-point shot, have transformed the game.

Unlikely Rivalry?

George’s remarks suggest that he believes players who came before deserve respect for their contributions to the league’s success today. Although Paul George and Anthony Edwards will only face off twice in the upcoming season, their exchange could lead to a budding rivalry.

While it’s possible that these comments could spark a rivalry between Paul George and Anthony Edwards, it seems unlikely. Rivalries have been ignited over less, as seen with the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers last year. However, the infrequent matchups between the 76ers and Timberwolves reduce the chances of sustained tension. Moreover, Edwards’ charismatic and youthful demeanor makes it doubtful that he will take George’s criticism to heart. Without a strong response from Edwards, this potential rivalry might never fully develop, remaining a footnote rather than fueling any significant animosity between the players or their teams.

Both the Sixers and Timberwolves are expected to be strong contenders for the NBA title this season. Philadelphia has strengthened its core with the addition of George alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, while Minnesota is coming off a trip to the Western Conference Finals. Edwards played a crucial role in that run, averaging 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game in the 2023-24 season.

The Last Word

Hopefully, the criticism Edwards has received will lead him to better appreciate the players who paved the way for his generation. The idea that each era of basketball builds on the previous one is essential to understanding the game’s evolution. Players in past generations walked so that today’s players could run.

In conclusion, Edwards’ comments have sparked important conversations about respecting the history of the NBA. It’s clear that many believe past players deserve recognition for their role in shaping the league into what it is today. As Edwards continues to grow in his career, the hope is that he will learn to value the contributions of those who came before him, understanding that their efforts have laid the foundation for his success.
