The Pacers continue adjusting their roster this week after adding two players in the draft last week.
After an active NBA Draft, the Pacers quickly move into free agency mode which officially tips off at 6 p.m. ET on Monday night. After adding Chris Duarte and Isaiah Jackson in the draft, the rest of the roster will be tweaked at a minimum starting this week as the team also prepares for Summer League in Vegas next week.
Plenty of free agent reports are already leaking and it appears among the Pacers bench free agents, T.J. McConnell is more likely to return while Doug McDermott is more likely to find greener pastures, not to mention stacks, elsewhere.
Among the links today are reports of trade rumors. Leading up to the draft, Myles Turner’s name was tied to several deals and now J. Michael reports the Knicks are still pursuing Turner after the draft. Considering all of the interest, it seems like the Pacers are in no hurry to bust up their front court. Also noted in the report, the Pacers would like to move Jeremy Lamb to better utilize his $10-plus million considering the current wing rotation options.
Additional reports have the Pacers interested in veteran free agents, Nicolas Batum and Lou Williams. Can they land the desired short-term help without overpaying in the long term?
A link also worth highlighting was Caris LeVert on J.J. Redick’s podcast which was entertaining on a few levels. Levert went into the excruciating process he had to go through to recover and then play following his cancer surgery last season. What a beast! He also shed some light on how dysfunctional the Pacers’ situation was last season behind closed doors.
Another interesting bit of info came from Redick regarding Rick Carlisle taking over the coaching reins for the Pacers. Redick ended the season with Dallas last year and had this to say about watching Carlisle work.
“I was so impressed with him as a coach and, specifically in the playoffs, as a tactician. I think your game and your skill set fit him so well because what Rick does as well as anybody is he finds matchups and he exploits those matchups and that suits your game so well. So I’m really excited to see him bring out the best in you.”
The Pacers will have their rookie/free agent camp this week to prepare for Summer League. Since the draft night trade for Isaiah Jackson is not official until Aug. 6, Jackson’s name is missing from the camp roster but he should be able to catch up in Vegas.
Here is the Summer Pacers schedule:
Aug. 8, Sunday, vs. Washington, 8 p.m., NBA TV
Aug. 10, Tuesday, vs. Atlanta, 6 p.m., NBA TV
Aug. 12, Thursday, vs. Portland, 6 p.m., NBA TV
Aug. 14, Saturday, vs. Oklahoma City, 6 p.m., ESPN2
Aug. 16, Monday-Aug. 17, Tuesday, tournament rounds, TBD
As the free agency rumors turn to news after 6 p.m. tonight, share your thoughts in the comments.
