On Thursday afternoon, the Indiana Pacers received some tough news about one of the team’s young guards.

Former second-round pick Edmond Sumner reportedly suffered a season-ending injury in practice today. According to a report from NBA Insider Shams Charania, Sumner suffered a torn Achilles.

The injury reportedly happened at practice on Thursday. Even though the NBA season doesn’t kick off for another two months, Sumner’s injury will cause him to miss the entire season.

A torn Achilles generally causes athletes to miss at least a full year of competition. Several NBA players including Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson have come back from Achilles injuries recently.

After becoming a second-round pick by the New Orleans Pelicans (and then traded to the Pacers) in 2017, Sumner has steadily improved over the past four years.

During the 2020-21 campaign, Sumner averaged 7.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists while shooting 58.7-percent from the field.

The former Xavier standout also made a major jump in his efficiency from beyond the three-point line. He never shot better than 26-percent from three before the 2020-21 season.

Last year, though, he shot nearly 40-percent from beyond the arc.
